Akwantufo Welfare Club in collaboration with Shape Attitude Ghana Donate to Ghana Education Service (GES), Winneba

The Akwantufo Welfare Club whose main focus is to help the needy and the vulnerable in society donated 27 trash bins to the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Winneba on September 25, 2015. The trash bins are to be disbursed to some selected private and public schools in the community.

Mr. K. B. Annan, patron of the club, said in his speech that the club has been donating annually to the community for the past years as part of their social responsibilities to the community and the nation at large. He said that the bins are to support efforts being made to reduce indiscriminate littering in the community. Mr. Annan expressed his sincere gratitude to Shape Attitude Ghana for the support Akwantufo Welfare Club received when they were identifying schools to receive the trash bins and also seeing to the design and printing of “Do Not Litter” campaign posters stuck on the bins.

The director of Shape Attitude Ghana, Mr. Wonderful Basie Ghartey who was also present at the ceremony took the opportunity to thank the Akwantufo Welfare Club for the collaboration they have had since the inception of Shape Attitude Ghana. He added that, when he started his project he met the president of the Akwantufo Welfare Club, Mr. Moses A. Morgue who introduced him to their club. The Club who shared in the goodness of his intention to sensitise the community towards a clean environment welcomed him and promised to assist in any way possible to make his project successful.

Mr. Ghartey added that it is the hope of Akwantufo Welfare Club that the presentation will serve as a reminder to both adults and children to put a stop to indiscriminate littering. According to him, filth is killing us and one of the major remedies lies in a change in our attitudes towards littering. He was of the hope that teachers and officers of education service will add their voice to the ongoing campaign to help curb the situation.

The general secretary of the Akwantufo Welfare Club, Mr. Akwasi Obeng-Asare, a civil engineer at the University of Education, Winneba, seized the opportunity to explain the idea behind the name of their club. He said that the word “AKWANTUFO” which literally means Travellers indicates that humans are visitors passing through the planet earth and therefore will be called individually to a final destination by their Maker at some point. Just as the prime objective their club is built on, he is encouraging everyone to be kind and quick to help each other as we travel.  Mr. Obeng-Asare added that their doors are open to anyone who has the needy at heart and would want to join or support their club to continue giving helping hands to the vulnerable in the society.

The Deputy Director of GES, Mr. P. K. Quaye who received the presents on behalf the Ghana Education Service, Winneba, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Akwantufo Welfare Club and Shape Attitude Ghana for their collaboration towards the donation they had received. He also agreed to the point made by Mr. Ghartey that the solution to tackling indiscriminate littering is by shaping our attitudes to refrain from the act. He therefore urged teachers who were present at the ceremony to continue educating and sensitising their pupils and students to maintain a clean environment all the time.

Present at the ceremony were Members of Akwantufo Welfare Club, volunteers from Shape Attitude Ghana and some teachers from the Ghana Education Service.
