Environmental Health Officers’ urged to strengthen inter sectoral approach

Environmental Health Officers have been advised to intensify inter-sectoral approach and play lead coordinating role in their work. The advice was given by the founder of Shape attitude Ghana, Wonderful Baisie Ghartey, at the 7th Quadrennial Delegates Congress of the Ghana Environmental Health Officers’ Association (GEHOA) at the University of Cape Coast.

Speaking on the theme, “The role of the Environmental Health Professionals in attaining sustainable development goals,” Mr Ghartey said it is through coordinated effort of all the stake holders led by Environmental Health Officers that good environmental health can be achieved. Most people still do not understand the correlation between health and development or the implication of poor sanitary conditions on health, hence health and education, for example, must go hand in hand backed by enforcement of sanitation bye laws. To this end, policies and pragmatic action plans that involve all the relevant sectors should be the way forward. In all these, someone has to take a lead role and it is Environmental Health Professionals.  A positive attitude of Environmental Health Professionals can be a catalytic factor in their role.

Mr Ghartey was a guest speaker at the Congress which was held from 9 – 12 August 2016 at the University of Cape Coast. Present at the meeting were the Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area and the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Joseph M. Dasanah.
