Mr. Ghartey Urges Students to Become Stewards of the Environment

Mr. Wonderful Basie Ghartey, the Director of Shape Attitude Ghana, has urged students to become custodians of the environment by adopting responsible attitudes and practices that promote cleanliness and protect natural resources for future generations.

He made the call at Smart Start Academy in Winneba during a Citizenship Week Celebration and observance of the 2026 World Environment Day organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), where he engaged pupils on the need for positive behavioural change towards environmental protection.

Mr. Ghartey identified improper waste disposal, plastic pollution and choked gutters as major sanitation challenges contributing to flooding and the spread of diseases in communities. He noted that many of these challenges are driven by negative attitudes and behavioural practices, stressing the need for individuals to take responsibility for their surroundings.

He encouraged the students to serve as ambassadors of cleanliness in their homes, schools and communities, emphasising that collective action and positive attitudinal change are critical to addressing sanitation challenges. “Every pupil has a role to play in protecting the environment. The change we seek begins with our daily actions and attitudes towards cleanliness,” he said.

Mr. Sena Bosson-Amedenu, the Municipal Head of NCCE, also educated the pupils on their constitutional rights and responsibilities, particularly within the digital space. He explained that the Constitution is not merely a document but a living framework that guides the rights, freedoms and responsibilities of every Ghanaian, including children.

Mr. Bosson-Amedenu urged the students to become responsible digital citizens by protecting their online privacy, verifying information before sharing and avoiding practices such as cyberbullying.

The engagement provided an interactive platform for pupils to discuss environmental protection, online safety, misinformation and responsible citizenship. The pupils actively participated in the discussions, demonstrating awareness of their role in promoting a clean environment and safe digital practices.

Present at the event were the Head of Smart Start Academy, Mrs. Sabina Woode; Mr. Michael Nyarkom of Shape Attitude Ghana; Mr. Dominic Eduful of NCCE; and teachers of the Academy.

Mrs. Sabina Woode’s participation highlighted her longstanding commitment to the Shape Attitude initiative, having supported the programme during its early implementation at Mother’s Unique Love School in 2015/2016. Her continued advocacy for values-based education continues to contribute to the development of responsible attitudes among young learners.

The engagement reflects Shape Attitude Ghana’s commitment to promoting positive attitudes, responsible citizenship and environmentally conscious behaviours among young people.
