SACOST-UEW and Shape Attitude Ghana join to celebrate World Environment Day

The Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST), University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in collaboration with shape Attitude Ghana on Monday 5th June, 2017 celebrated the World Environment Day to educate and sensitise the general public on protecting the environment well for our survival. The theme for the occasion was “connecting people to nature.”

Addressing the gathering which was mainly pupils from selected schools in Winneba, Prof. Jophus Anamoah-Mensah, Director of Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS), UEW, and the first Vice Chancellor of UEW called on everyone to create a better place for the next generation.

All the speakers talked about the importance of education in changing attitudes and the need to make values and good attitudes part and parcel of our education, and inspire the youth to have positive attitude towards the environment. Specific reference was made to illegal and careless logging and mining resulting in deforestation and degradation of the land and water bodies. In this regard, the speakers called for enactment of policies that will help to make the environment a better place and ensure such policies were adhered to.

Prof. Kolawole Raheem, the Head of SACOST, reminded the public that World Environment Day is not just for a day but every day of our lives and adopting responsible conservation is a crucial way of protecting the environment. He added that, SACOST’s responsibility is to educate and impact the young ones hence the collaboration with Shape Attitude Ghana. 

The event also saw a new programme rolled out by Zoomlion Foundation being launched. “The Zoomkids Programme is aimed at educating the young ones on how to keep their surroundings clean that they may grow with this attitude”, said Mrs. Sarah Kyei who launched the programme.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor as Chairman for the occasion, Prof. Aseidu Addo remarked that the environment is for all of us and we must come together to make it a better place. He commended Shape Attitude Ghana for collaborating with SACOST to sensitize the Winneba populace, and called for more of such collaborations with the University and other organizations or institutions.    

The Head of SACOST, Professor Kolawole Raheem, presented the Hon. Nii Ephraim Award to Winneba Senior High School for placing second in an international competition organised by the Carnegie Institute based in Washington, USA, where the students applied indigenous means to treat contaminated water. The winning students were taken to the United States of America for a study tour.

Other speakers on the occasion were Mr Nelson Ahebor of Minerals Commission, Derick Romeo Adogla of Ghana Chamber of Mines , Mr Wonderful Baisie Ghartey, Director of Shape Attitude Ghana, Mrs Sarah Kyei, National Coordinator, Zoomlion Foundation, Mr Andrew K. Asamoah, Executive Chairman of A&C Development Company and President of Ghana Association of Former Interventional Civil Servants (GAFICS), and Mrs Adwoa Amofa, representing the Municipal Chief Executive.
