Shape Attitude Ghana and UEW Partner to Promote Litter-Free Campuses

Shape Attitude Ghana has partnered with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to promote environmental cleanliness and achieve a litter-free status across the University’s campuses.  

The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Council Chamber of UEW on Wednesday, 9^th September, 2026.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will collaborate on sensitisation and awareness campaigns aimed at changing students’ mindsets and promoting positive attitudes and practices towards environmental cleanliness.

The partnership will establish a Task Force responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring and reporting on activities aimed at achieving litter-free campuses. The Task Force will include representatives from UEW and Shape Attitude Ghana, comprising officials from Student Affairs, Estate, Health, Security, Finance, the University Relations Office, SACOST, the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG).

The agreement requires the Task Force to develop a framework for achieving a litter-free status, assign responsibilities, prepare an action plan, secure funding and submit regular reports to the Vice-Chancellor.

Mr. Wonderful Baisie Ghartey, the Director of Shape Attitude Ghana, emphasised the critical role academic institutions play in fostering positive attitudes towards environmental cleanliness. He expressed concern about the current state of cleanliness in some academic institutions and urged students and other members of the university community to initiate change within their immediate surroundings and to extend responsible environmental practices beyond the campus.

“Let them start at home. Keep the environment clean, and then they can extend this effort outside,” he said.

Mr. Ghartey stated that Shape Attitude Ghana is prepared to collaborate with other institutions interested in adopting the initiative, stressing the crucial role of academic institutions in promoting behavioural change.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed the University’s support for the initiative and described the challenge of environmental cleanliness as requiring a significant shift in public attitudes and behaviour.

He criticised the tendency of people to indiscriminately dispose of waste despite repeated public education campaigns, arguing that more deliberate efforts are needed to change attitudes towards sanitation.

Prof. Mitchual also criticised the practice of some graduating students leaving university spaces littered after completing their final examinations, describing it as a mindset that needs to change.

He assured Shape Attitude Ghana of UEW’s support as the organisation collaborated with the University to advance the litter-free campus agenda.

The MoU builds on a relationship between the two organisations dating back to June 2014, when Shape Attitude Ghana first engaged with UEW through the Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST) during activities commemorating World Environment Day.

Since then, the organisation has collaborated with the University on various activities and received support from UEW. The new agreement establishes a formal framework to deepen this collaboration and coordinate efforts towards cleaner and more environmentally responsible campuses.
