SHAPE Attitude Ghana joins SACOST/UEW to mark World Environment Day

The Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies of the University of Education, Winneba (SACOST/UEW) in collaboration with Shape Attitude Ghana organised a durbar to mark 2016 World Environment Day (WED).

Delivering a speech on the theme “Join the race to make the world a better place,” the Chairperson of the event Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, Deputy Registrar of the University of Education, Winneba representing Dr Christopher Akwaa-Mensah, Registrar spoke on the need to protect our environment from degradation. The chairman and all the other speakers pointed to destruction of our environment through illegal mining, contamination of the water bodies, deforestation and improper waste management as ways of destroying the environment. The speakers also touched on disregard for byelaws on environmental protection including sanitation and called for action to be taken.

The Director of SHAPE Attitude Ghana echoed the need for enforcement of the byelaws on sanitation to act as catalyst to attitudinal change. He called on all present to contribute in their personal capacities to protect the environment and not wait for a central body for action. The Director challenged the Municipal Assembly, the Environmental Office, The GPRTU Office at the lorry station and Zoom Lion to take a step by declaring the lorry station a “no drop zone” and enforce it to set as an example in Winneba.

The event took place at the Central Lorry Station where some selected schools and dignitaries from Effutu Municipal Assembly, the Ghana Minerals Commission, Ghana Chamber of Mines, Water Resource Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, Zoom Lion and Ghana Education Service participated. Other invitees were Akwantufo Welfare Club, The Police Service, Prison Service and the Council of Churches. The chairman for the occasion was Dr Christopher Akwaa-Mensah, Registrar of the University of Education, Winneba. WED fell on 5 June 2016 but as the day was a Sunday, activities marking the day were pushed to Monday, 6 June 2016.
