Using community radio to facilitate community participation in children’s well being

SHAPE Attitude Ghana was invited to give a talk on sanitation at a forum at Gomoa Ohua near Dawurampong off Apam Junction on Friday 27th October, 2017. The forum which was organised by Radio Peace, Winneba, had the theme “Community Participation in Children’s wellbeing”. It was part of series of community activities organised in collaboration with UNICEF, Radio Peace, Ghana Health Service, School Health Education Programme of the Ghana Education Service, Environmental Health Unit and Chiefs of Gomoa Ohua. The project is using community radio to facilitate community participation in children’s wellbeing. A wide range of areas were covered at the forum among them were immunisation, use of impregnated mosquito nets, birth certificates, school going age, teen age pregnancy, breast feeding, regular food for kids, hand washing, countering diarrhoea and open defaecation.

The Founder and Project Director of Shape Attitude Ghana, Wonderful Baisie Ghartey, took the gathering through the causes of poor sanitary conditions and the accompanying diseases which are detrimental to development of the community. He advised the community to adopt good sanitary practices in order to prevent diseases because it is much cheaper, more convenient and not time consuming as treating diseases. He further advised that community leaders should take initiatives in provision of amenities like toilet facilities and not always rely on the government. The Director donated trash bin, posters and stickers to the Ohua school.

A fashion designer, Rics Designs from Ansaful donated a desk top computer to the school.

Other personalities and speakers at the forum were Mr Kwame Anamoah who led Radio Peace team; Ms Asher Aba Quansah of School Health Education Programme (SHEP) from the Ghana Education Service, Apam;  Mr Obeng Mark, Disease Control  Officer of Gomoa West, Mr Robert Kojo Mensah and Ms Anna Obir Bonney all Health Promotion Officers; the Head Teacher of Ohua school Mr Albert Attakora Nyarko; Ms Hannah Ivy Abeku a Community Health Nurse and opinion leaders.
